Pirates set to tee off fall season in Cortez

The Pagosa Springs High School golf team will kick off its fall season today, Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Cortez Tournament at Conquistador Golf Course in Cortez.

The team’s first day of practice was Monday, Aug. 5.

Last season, Pagosa Springs High School Pirate sophomore Johnathon Smith tied for 10th at the 3A state golf championships, making him an all-state golfer.

Smith tied for 10th with four other golfers, with all five finishing with a total of 162 at the two-day tournament.

Cedar Liverett, a junior last season, was the first alternate for the state championships, but did not end up competing.

Coach Mark Faber could not be reached for comment by press time Wednesday.

Schedule

The following schedule was accurate as of Tuesday, but is subject to change.

All tournaments begin at 9 a.m. unless otherwise noted.

After opening the season today, the Pirates will next be in action at the Alamosa Golf Tournament at Cattails Golf Course on Aug. 16.

On Aug. 26, the team will take part in the Durango Tournament at Hillcrest Golf Course in Durango at a time to be announced.

The following the day, the team will head back to Cortez for another tournament.

At noon on Aug. 28, the team will host its home tournament at Pagosa Springs Golf Course.

The Pirates will again hit the road on Sept. 6 for the Monte Vista Tournament at Monte Vista Golf Club at a time to be announced.

On Sept. 9, the team will head to Gunnison for the Gunnison Golf Tournament.

The Pirates are slated to close the regular season at the Durango Tournament at Dalton Ranch Golf Club on Sept. 10.

Regionals will be hosted the week of September 30, with the state championships being Oct. 7 and 8.
