Chas. (Dick) Brown has been awarded the contract to dig the trench and lay the sewer for the new school house. The work is now in progress, commencing at the river and extending through the park.
Tomorrow is the last day of the One-Cent sale of all Rexall goods in the drug store. It is a sale where you buy an item at the regular price, and then for 1¢ more you get another item of the same kind.
J.W. Taylor and wife were arrivals Monday from Cedaredge, Colo., to visit at the home of the former’s daughter, Mrs. S.E. Edmisten. Mr. Taylor was one of the early residents of Archuleta county and will be remembered by the old-timers. He was one of the first school teachers in the county, besides being one of the first to join the Masonic order.
Chas. Parcell and Chas. Brink arrived overland Tuesday from Taos with his pack animals and will soon pilot a party of seven New York residents, including the Merritts, who have been making annual pilgrimages to this territory, on a trip through the San Juan mountains to Silverton. Mrs. Parcell came in Tuesday evening by train.

According to figures released this week by county assessor Earl Lattin, the assessed valuation of Archuleta County and the Town of Pagosa Springs has increased materially over the 1948 values.
The 1948 valuation for the entire county was $3,572,635.00 and for 1949 the assessed valuation for the entire county is set at $3,683,405.00 or an increase of $110,770.00. The Board of County Commissioners will set the tax levies for the county at a meeting later in the fall.
The valuation for the Town of Pagosa Springs increased from the 1948 figure of $548,595.00 to the 1949 valuation of $589,780.00. This is an increase of $48,185.00. The increased valuation for the town and county will be a big help in the tax situation and shows most definitely that this area is growing rapidly.
Mrs. Richard DeVore entertained the Pagosa Springs chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi on Monday evening at her home. After a short business meeting, Mrs. DeVore served refreshments to those present. Members present were Mrs. Harvey Catchpole, Mrs. Aubrey Fowler, Mrs. J.F. Thiele, Miss Phoebe Jones, Mrs. H. Ray Macht and Mrs. Herbert Kingsley.

Building permits issued by the town during the month of July were again at a high point. Total dollar value of permits issued was $110,000.00. Building the past two years in town has been much greater than ever before in the history of Pagosa Springs. This year is down somewhat from last year, but by the end of the year the totals may be nearly even.
Mrs. Harold Schutz, president of the Woman’s Civic Club, said this week that a one day flea market will be held Saturday, August 17. Location will be announced next week. Purpose of the event is to raise money for the County Library. She asks that anyone having articles of any kind — including cooking utensils, clothing, used or unused items of value — to donate for the sale can help by leaving the articles at the San Juan Motel.

The Ranch Community Property Owners Association filed an amended declaration of restrictions with the Archuleta County clerk Monday morning that would allow the Ranch Community to withdraw from the Pagosa Lakes Property Owners Association effective Dec. 31, 1999.
Ranch Community Property Owners Association President Joe Donavan said the main reason for withdrawing from the PLPOA was that “they have nothing to offer the Ranch Community people. We have a home owners association and we are currently doing everything we need from such an association.
Donavan said 67 of 115 Ranch Community owners signed a document approving withdrawal from PLPOA. Ranch Community Secretary Scott Firth said the document required both a “majority of owners and a majority of lots, and we got both.”
Newly-elected PLPOA President Pat Curtis doesn’t expect the Ranch Community to be going anywhere soon. “Our attorney has advised us that withdrawal from PLPOA requires a change in the master declaration, so from our standpoint, we think it’s probably invalid.”
