Posted

The Pagosa Springs High School Lady Pirate volleyball team logged a come-from-behind league win in Cortez Tuesday night.

With the win, the Lady Pirates improve to a 7-6 overall record and 2-3 Intermountain League mark, which puts them fourth in the league.

The Lady Pirates are the No. 29 team in the 3A Selection and Seeding Index standings.

“We just won in five,” coach Katie Lorenzen said following the game, calling it “really exciting to finish super strong in the fourth and fifth sets.”

The Lady Pirates fell 25-23 in the first set before evening things with a 25-21 second-set win.

The Pirates again fell in the third set, 25-19, but rebounded to win in the following two sets 25-8 and 15-12, respectively.

“We had really great serving runs. Sophia [Sottek], she led the team really well tonight, just ... demanding more from our passers, serving super well. Aspen [Pitcher] had some nice runs of serves at the end, as well,” Lorenzen highlighted.

The coach also spoke of the adjustments the Lady Pirates made to find success in Cortez.

“Cortez is a ... super scrappy team and have a couple really good outside hitters, and when we finally made the adjustment and middles took off to commit blocked, they commit blocked the outsides, then it changed the momentum to our side,” she explained.

Lorenzen added the Lady Pirates struggled with passing for a while, making it harder for the team to get into a rhythm.

“But, we finally did, and to win the fourth set really big and then the fifth set in a loud gym with a student section that was kind of harassing our girls, it was fun to bring big energy and a big win,” the coach said.

Stats from the game were not available by press time Wednesday.

The Lady Pirates will continue league play on Saturday, Oct. 5, when they travel to Alamosa to take on the fourth-ranked Mean Moose at 3 p.m.

The Mean Moose are 11-2 overall and 4-0 in league play.

The Mean Moose previously defeated the Lady Pirates 3-0 on Sept. 5.

Then, on Tuesday, the Lady Pirates will travel to Durango to take on the 5A Demons, who are 6-5 on the season and are ranked 28th in the 5A index standings.
