Pirate teams to host Sweet 16 action Friday, Saturday

After first-round wins, the Pagosa Springs High School Pirate basketball teams are slated to host Sweet 16 action Friday and Saturday.

After defeating No. 28 Manitou Springs 40-16 in the first round Tuesday, the No. 5 Lady Pirates will host the No. 12 Eaton Reds at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23.

Eaton beat No. 21 Coal Ridge 70-36 to advance. The Reds are 16-8 on the season, while the Lady Pirates are 20-4.

The No. 4 Pirate boys' team defeated the No. 29 Delta Panthers 59-45 Wednesday to advance to the Sweet 16 round.

The team will now face the No. 13 Holy Family Tigers, who defeated No. 20 Denver West 64-53. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24.

The Tigers are 14-10 on the season. The Pirates are 23-1.

Winners of each of the games will advance to the Great 8, which is slated to be held at the Denver Coliseum on March 2.
