Food drive to support area food pantries set for Aug. 31

Community food-sharing opportunities allow us to gather together to support our community as a whole.

Healthy Archuleta is partnering to host a food drive on Aug. 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at City Market.

Those who are able to are encouraged to share what they can to help the Food Distribution Center better support the Archuleta County Food Pantry Network with foods that our neighbors can use.

Join Healthy Archuleta in supporting the food security of our local community. A collection table will be set up at the store with a list of food items that our neighbors can use this summer and volunteers ready to collect donations.

These items will help stock the shelves of the Food Distribution Center, which supports the food pantries in Archuleta County. Come participate in a community food-sharing opportunity.

If you would like to make donations to the food drive outside of the hours, there is a collection bin at the UPS Store located at the front of the store.

Conversations in the Garden

Conversations in the Garden take place at the Pagosa Springs Community Garden (PSCG) downtown.

Situated right along the Riverwalk, overlooking the San Juan River, the garden is a small but active area for enthusiastic local gardeners to fill raised beds with all types of vegetables, herbs and flowers. This season has especially seen the benefits of afternoon rain showers, providing additional moisture to thirsty vegetation and giving those working in the garden a cool break from the heat.

Conversations in the Garden have been a gathering of folks wanting to chat about the pleasures and sometimes challenges of growing in our climate and elevation.

Topics have included dealing with local wildlife, insects (both the good and the bad) and weed control.

These gatherings are scheduled to continue on Saturday mornings later this month and twice more into September. Please join us at 8:30 a.m. on Saturdays, Aug. 24, Sept. 7 and 21. These garden conversations last about an hour.

Also, this season, the PSCG has partnered with Healthy Archuleta’s youth interns as well as members of CLAC en Español to learn more about gardening in the mountains.

These groups have made several visits to the community garden to assist with pulling weeds, laying out mulch in between the beds and along the paths, along with watering and composting. Their efforts will go to not only feed their families, but also provide needed fresh produce to some of our local food pantries.
