The steel for the new Piedra bridge is now being hauled daily, the Shields caterpillar tractor and log wagons being used for that purpose.

Rapid progress is being made by Shields & Kyle on their work between Bayfield and Pagosa Springs. This consists of a steel bridge and one mile of gravel surfacing. These contractors have the happy faculty of getting action on their work.

A maintenance crew has removed all of the snow and rock from Wolf Creek pass. Operations on the pass were resumed this month (June), with Roy Mooney in charge. About four miles of work remain to be done on the western slope. It is probable that the steam shovel will continue on the road from Wolf Creek towards Pagosa Springs.

Roy Mooney, who first gained fame as a road builder during the construction of the Lookout Mountain road, has joined the state highway force. He has been placed in charge of the steam shovel outfit which has resumed operations on the western slope of Wolf Creek pass.

The parade held downtown on the 4th of July was a marked success with all spectators being high in their praise of the floats and contestants. The parade was a huge affair with six floats and several hundred horseback riders, bicycles, pedestrians and Indians. The parade ended in the town park and was followed by several dances by the Indians. Mr. David Hersch carried the colors in the parade and Miss Jean Macht carried the Colorado flag. A parade in Pagosa Springs without Mr. Hersch would be practically impossible. He has carried the flag in the 4th of July parade for many years and presents a very distinguished appearance. Mr. Hersch and Miss Jean Macht were followed by Miss Eaklor, Queen of the Round-Up, her attendants, Miss Janice Martinez, and Miss Jeanne Shahan, Queen of the Fiesta. Immediately following the queen and her attendants were Fred (Red Ryder) Harman and Little Beaver accompanied by Jimmy Montgomery and Jack Schoeppy.

Mr. H. Ray  Macht was chairman of the parade and along with those who contributed so much in the way of floats and other decorations is to be highly commended for his efforts in making the parade such a success.

Modesto Montoya, town water commissioner, this week stressed that a great deal of water is being wasted by homeowners. At times water is left running into the streets for long periods of time. Too, he pointed out, town ordinances set watering and sprinkling hours as the daylight hours and sprinklers should not be allowed to run at night. If serious shortages are to be avoided, these regulations must be observed.

Bids were opened this week for a court house annex to provide additional space badly needed for various offices in the main building. By moving the commissioners meeting room and welfare department into the new annex, additional space will be created in the main building for other offices.

Forest service officials in this area report that the fire danger is extreme, that only prompt action has prevented a major fire and express concern should any fire gain headway. Conditions are very dry at all altitudes, and fire would spread very rapidly.

The July 1 sale of the Great Pagosa Hot Spring property to a local business group is a signal that development of the 20-plus acre parcel could soon be an important part of the Hot Springs Boulevard corridor in downtown Pagosa Springs.

On July 1, documents were filed with the Archuleta County clerk indicating the property was purchased from a group consisting of 11 investors. The sale price was not disclosed.

The purchaser is Pagosa Spring Inc., a corporation which includes Bill Dawson and Matt Mees, owners of the Spring Inn property adjacent to the Hot Spring site on Hot Springs Boulevard.

While there are not specific development plans in hand, Mees said he and Dawson intend to allow for the construction of the San Juan Riverwalk across the back of the newly-acquired property, permitting the path to be extended along the San Juan River to the site of the proposed town hall and community center.
