League of Women Voters to celebrate community service nonprofits with July 9 film screening

Posted

On July 9, the local chapter of the League of Women Voters (LWV) is sponsoring a screening of the award-winning documentary “Join or Die!” which will be followed by a “Joining Fair” featuring key local nonprofits and clubs.

The doors open at the historic Liberty Theatre at 5:30 p.m., with the screening at 6 p.m.

After the screening, 10 nonprofits/clubs will explain their mission and volunteer needs.

These worthy organizations include: Archuleta Senior Center, Chimney Rock Interpretive Association, Habitat for Humanity, Healthy Archuleta, Mountain Rotary, Pagosa Community Initiative, Pagosa Springs Rotary, Ruby Sisson Library, Vets4Vets and the Weminuche Audubon Society.

After the presentations, you can vote for your favorite. The top three vote-getters will receive a grant from the local LWV Chapter. You must purchase a ticket to the film to vote.

The LWV was founded in 1920, just six months before the 19th amendment was ratified and women won the right to vote.

Today, the LWV has more than 800 local and state chapters with a motto of “Empowering Voters. Defending Democracy.”

This nonpartisan, grassroots organization works to protect and expand voting rights, and ensure everyone is represented in our democracy. The LWV works to increase voter participation through advocacy, education and litigation at the local, state and national levels.

Each chapter gets to choose its own agenda, programs and policies.

“All politics is local,” said civic leader Thomas O’Neill Sr.

Our chapter is dedicated to local issues: increasing voter participation, voter education and providing a safe and civil forum to discuss vital topics affecting our quality of life here in Pagosa Springs.

Current membership includes Republicans, Democrats and independents, men and women — all are welcome. If you want to join our mailing list to hear about monthly meetings and events, please contact Ginger Baxt at vpbaxt@gmail.com.
