Community United Methodist Church to close ‘Direction’ series with Labor Day Communion Sunday

Posted

The Community United Methodist Church will close its six-week “Direction: Following the Way” sermon series this Sunday, Sept. 6, with a Communion Sunday message titled “The Way Forward” drawn from John 14: 1–7.

Services are at 8:15 and 11 a.m. at 434 Lewis St.

The sermon brings the summer series to a close by returning to the question at its heart — “How do I find direction when the road ahead is unclear?” — and landing on Jesus’s answer to Thomas: “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”

“Thomas wanted a map,” said Pastor Ken Daniell. “Jesus gave him something better. Not directions, a companion. I am the Way. Walk with me. That is the answer to every question this series has been asking.”

The sermon will cast a vision for what intentional community engagement looks like for a congregation called to go out rather than wait for people to come in, showing up at the food share, at community events and in the places where neighbors already are.

“Church growth is not an accident,” Daniell said. “It is intentional. And it starts with showing up where people already are and walking with them the way Jesus walked with people.”

Communion will be served at both services. All are welcome at the table regardless of background, belief or history with church.

Next Sunday, Sept. 13, the Community United Methodist Church will begin a new series — “Peace: Holding It Together” —exploring the longing for peace that is deep enough to hold us when life feels fragmented.
