Archuleta County and the Town of Pagosa Springs will be holding their joint Big Spring Clean event on May 5 and 6.
According to County Manager Derek Woodman, the event provides an opportunity for area residents to dispose of unwanted possessions and trash accumulated over the winter.
According to the Archuleta County website, the event will include several opportunities to dispose of unwanted items for free at a variety of locations.
The site indicates that roll-off dumpsters will be available in several locations for free dumping of “roadside, park, and home exterior trash.”
Woodman highlighted that the Big Spring Clean event is only for residential waste and that waste from businesses or commercial enterprises will not be accepted.
According to the website, the dumpsters will be manned and available from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days and will be located at the town shop, located at 550 Pirate Drive, inside the fenced lot; at the Pagosa Lakes Property Owners Association clubhouse, located at 230 Port Ave., between the clubhouse parking lot and the remote airfield; and at the Aspen Springs Park on Ute Drive.
The website states that the Pagosa Springs transfer station at 2140 County Road (CR) 500 and the landfill at 9179 CR 500 will also be open and accepting trash and items for free, including regular recycling, car batteries, electronics and appliances without freon at the transfer station, and mattresses and tires in limited quantities at the landfill.
The website indicates that the transfer station will also accept appliances with freon for a $25 fee and the landfill will be accepting building materials at the regular rate of $55 per ton.
The Pagosa transfer station will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both May 5 and May 6, while the landfill will be open from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on May 5 and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 6.
The Arboles transfer station will not be participating in the event.
Additionally, vehicles and engines will be accepted for free at the Archuleta County Fairgrounds at 344 U.S. 84 between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., according to the website.
It indicates that all vehicles must be drained of fluids and a title must be provided.
The website adds that the Big Spring Clean will feature an event on May 6 in Yamaguchi Park where community members can participate in cleanup efforts.
The event will begin at 9 a.m., when volunteers will gather in the park to pick up bags and vests and receive cleanup area assignments before dispersing to perform cleanup work on roadways in the county.
Participants will then return to the park by 11:30 a.m. to participate in a barbecue for volunteers featuring live music from the Jackson Mountain Ramblers, awards and a homemade ice cream contest, which the website notes is in honor of the late local activist Larry Fisher.
The site reminds participants to bring their lawn chairs for the barbecue.
