Thanksgiving, traditionally, is a favorite holiday for many of us. It is a time to be with family and friends and enjoy a big meal of turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes, green beans, pumpkin and pecan pie — a time to eat until you cannot hold another bite. It is a time to share in conversation, laughter and memories.

Next week, Loaves and Fishes, a local nonprofit, will make sure that no one goes without the opportunity to enjoy a delicious early Thanksgiving meal. On Thursday, Nov. 18, beginning at 11 a.m., members of St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church will prepare and serve the 16th annual Loaves and Fishes Thanksgiving feast. The free meal will be complete with roasted turkey, homemade dressing and all the delicious side dishes that make the meal special. Although sit-down service is still not available, you are invited to drive up or walk up and receive meals for yourself, family and friends.

“It is a joy to share our gratitude with our neighbors,” said St. Patrick’s Rector Wren Blessing. Opportunities to share in thanksgiving continue as St. Patrick’s will hold a Thanksgiving Eve Eucharist on Nov. 24 at 5 p.m., which is open to the community.

Loaves and Fishes is a nonprofit organization that serves a free hot meal every Thursday at the Catholic Parish Hall on Lewis Street from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A wide variety of organizations from around town sponsor the meals. Loaves and Fishes provides the meat, bread and dessert and the organizations provide the rest. There is a professional cook on staff to help with preparation. Loaves and Fishes will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25.

“Certainly, we have so much to be thankful for,” said Ken Young, Loaves and Fishes board president. “Our community demonstrates kindness and generosity every week by sponsoring the meals, bringing joy to so many. None of this could happen without their wonderful support.”
