So, what is the best time of day to go ice fishing? Many experienced ice anglers agree that ice fishing is best during the first couple hours after sunrise and for about two hours before and after sunset. Every lake is different and each type of fish has unique habits that could make the bite good all day. The time of day does matter. Generally, ice fishing is most productive in the early morning before sunrise and then again as the sun is going down. Of course, you can ice fish during the day but the prime hours are early in the morning and at night.

Most anglers generally use a rod and reel for ice or open water fishing, although the ice-rod will usually be shorter. And, of course, you need to have some line on that reel, and you need to attach the line to your lure. You can use a regular fishing rod for ice fishing, but it’s not an ideal solution. Ice fishing poles are much shorter than regular rods on average. So if you’re going to use a regular fishing rod for this purpose, try to choose this collapsible fishing rod.
Nightcrawlers can be an excellent bait for ice fishing, depending on the fish species you want to catch. They are one of the best ice fishing baits for all kinds of trout, and also work well for crappie and other panfish.
