Next health and wellness event for seniors May 30

Posted

The Senior Center has a pilot program expanding health and wellness services to Archuleta County seniors. The program includes wellness and blood pressure monitoring, or allows individual area seniors to discuss two subjects of their choice.

There is no charge for Medicare enrollees. Participant IDs will include Medicare card, photo ID and, if necessary, any supplemental insurances. No Medicaid is accepted at this time. Participants are encouraged to bring a list of their current medications.

Clinical assessment will be provided by Tabitha Zappone, FNP-C.

The goal of the outreach clinic is to provide care to those who are not able to travel.

The next health and wellness event will be May 30.

Medical alert system

Medical alert monitoring systems are available for seniors. We can help you get set up with a system and assist with the monthly service charges or, if you already have a system in place, we can help supplement the monthly service fees.

San Juan Basin Area Agency on Aging: Life safety survey

By Kay Kaylor

As the part-time long-term care ombudsman for Archuleta County, I advocate for residents at Pine Ridge and BeeHive Homes. Federal and state laws protect residents to promote quality of care and quality of life. As noted previously, Pine Ridge’s annual Life Safety inspection by the state health department occurred on April 17.

Using the National Fire Protection Association’s 2012 codes, it found three deficiencies, all corrected by April 23, according to staff. The tags were discussed with the maintenance supervisor and the administrator, who made the corrections. The first tag referred to too high a pressure on an exit door at the end of a hall. Staff purchased a door pressure gauge, adjusted the pressure and reported they will do a weekly inspection to maintain compliance.

The second tag involved an exit sign in the dining room entrance area; it did not stay illuminated when tested. Staff purchased two exit signs, one as a replacement and one as a backup. Regular inspections are planned.

The third tag stated that one fire sprinkler head in one room had paint on the bulb portion. The paint was cleaned off and all the sprinkler heads were checked in all residents’ rooms. The maintenance director will randomly check sprinkler heads throughout Pine Ridge.

For all three tags, the plan of correction stated that any issues that occur will be brought to the attention of the quality assurance committee for further review. All surveys are provided for the public in a notebook near the entrance.
