Chris Pitcher and Nicole DeMarco enjoy the Kentucky Derby festivities, which starts as it does in Kentucky — with a buffet lunch and desserts, sipping on mint juleps and other spirits from the bar, listening to live music, and betting on a favorite horse and cheering them on across the finish line. Special to The PREVIEW

The setting at Keyah Grande Lodge is elegant, as are the partygoers. Last year’s Kentucky Derby Party in Pagosa Springs brought out the most gorgeous and creative outfits, complemented with eye-catching hats on both the ladies and the gentlemen — the finest fare for one of the most prestigious horse races in the world.

This year’s Derby party will have more of the same. A festive afternoon with live music, a buffet luncheon and desserts, betting on the big race just like you were in Kentucky at the Derby. Guests will join the 100,000-plus at the Louisville race track via a big-screen TV for the pre-race festivities, review of thoroughbreds, singing “My Old Kentucky Home” and, the cherished moment, “They’re off!” as we watch the horses race around the Churchill Downs track.

Pagosa Rotary Club will host a Kentucky Derby Party on May 5 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the prestigious Keyah Grande Lodge west of Pagosa Springs on U.S. 160.

Tickets are $45 per person and can be purchased from any Rotarian or at Exit Realty. Profits from the Kentucky Derby Party are donated within the community in the form of postsecondary scholarships, food-filled backpacks for youth needing weekend meals, dictionaries for third-grade students, teacher mini-grants and sponsoring youth leaders to attend leadership camps.

The hat contest is a party favorite and prizes will be awarded to both men and women for style and creativity. The “Adventure Silent Auction” will feature many exciting trips and activities including an overnight stay in Ouray, jeep trip, guided raft trip and golf packages, just to name a few.
