The Senior Center has a pilot program expanding health and wellness services to Archuleta County seniors. The program includes wellness and blood pressure monitoring, or allows individual area seniors to discuss two subjects of their choice.

The next health and wellness date is Jan. 31, 2018.

There is no charge for Medicare enrollees. Participant IDs will include Medicare card, photo ID and, if necessary, any supplemental insurances. No Medicaid is accepted at this time. Participants are encouraged to bring a list of their current medications.

Clinical assessment will be provided by Tabitha Zappone, FNP-C.

The goal of the outreach clinic is to provide care to those who are not able to travel

Medical alert system

Medical Alert monitoring systems are available for seniors. The Pagosa Springs Senior Center can help you get set up with a system and assist with the monthly service charges, or, if you already have a system in place, we can help supplement the monthly service fees.

San Juan Basin Area Agency on Aging: The new survey process

By Kay Kaylor

I advocate for residents at Pine Ridge and BeeHive Homes as the long-term care ombudsman for Archuleta County. Federal and state laws protect residents for their safety and to promote quality of care and quality of life. The New Year begins with implementing the revised federal nursing home regulations, which include the new nursing home survey process mentioned in early December. As required, the annual recertification survey results are provided near the entrance at Pine Ridge and are published online at medicare.gov under “Nursing Home Compare.”

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment in-person survey lasts for three days and survey team members arrive without notice. They observe and interview a sample of residents, particularly the most vulnerable, residents who have lost weight, new admissions, people who have complained or been part of an incident and active resident council attendees.

The survey team also observes the first meal and other meals if concerns arise. They investigate the adequacy and competence of nurse staffing and observe and assess whether the nursing home follows all the regulations. For example, “Each resident must receive and the facility must provide the necessary behavioral health care and services to attain or maintain the highest practicable physical, mental and psychosocial well-being,” as defined in individual care plans. If a home is tagged with a violation, it is given a chance to respond and explain how it will remedy the situation.
