Special to The PREVIEW
The hit television show “So You Think You Can Dance” has popularized the art of dance and familiarized the general public with the complexities of different styles.
Shows like this and “Dancing with the Stars” bring dance into the household in a safe and comfortable manner, as we sit snugly on the couch and watch others work hard and potentially fail. These shows allow us to see both experts and novices navigate the world of story-telling with their bodies. Obviously, we Americans are addicted to this idea.
But what might happen if we actually tried it ourselves? If, instead of watching these other folks take chances and try something new, we were the ones sweating and working hard to learn a new skill? I’ll go out on a limb and say it might just give us a completely new appreciation for the art and therefore enrich our lives in ways we couldn’t anticipate.
