Pagosa District crews reported a fire started by lightning yesterday afternoon about a mile north of the Four Mile Falls Trailhead near Pagosa Springs. It is estimated at 1/10th of an acre, with a low potential for spread due to rain. The fire is being monitored today.
Columbine District fire crews reported three new lightning starts late yesterday afternoon clustered together about five miles northeast of Vallecito Reservoir in the Weminuche Wilderness. An aerial reconnaissance flight revealed that three separate snags had been ignited by lightning during a thunderstorm.
The small fires were reported as smoldering yesterday at 1/10th of an acre, with a low potential for spread due to rain. The starts were visible yesterday, but no smoke has been reported yet this morning. A Forest Service fire engine is positioned nearby, and the fires are being monitored. Meanwhile, fire crews were able to build a line yesterday around another single-tree fire reported yesterday afternoon northwest of Vallecito. Crews are hiking in this morning to conduct mop-up operations on that lightning strike.
