Special to The PREVIEW

This October, San Juan Basin Health is proud to participate in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in Colorado among females, killing more than 500 women annually. But when breast cancer is detected early, 98 percent of those diagnosed can survive.

If you are a woman age 40-64 years, talk with your provider about screening for breast cancer. Your provider can help you decide when and how often to get mammograms.

San Juan Basin Health provides sexual health services for Archuleta County including screenings for breast and cervical cancer. Through the Women’s Wellness Connection (http://www.womenswellnessconnection.org/), low-income women between ages 40-64 may qualify for free breast exams, pap tests and pelvic exams. Referrals for free mammograms are available for women who qualify.
