A cabinet shop located in the Pagosa Lakes area caught fire Monday morning, with the cause still under investigation.

The fire, at the Lone Pine cabinet shop located at 197 Greenbriar Drive and owned by Jeff and Maddie Besera, was called in at 12:29 a.m. Monday, with the Pagosa Fire Protection District responding, according to Duwane Ramey, assistant chief of operations.

The PFPD responded to the fire with six pieces of equipment and 14 firefighters.

The PFPD cleared the incident at 7:25 a.m. that morning, under the direction of Incident Commander John Gilbert.

One engine and eight firefighters returned to the site early Monday afternoon, however, putting out additional hot spots.

The building was again checked for hot spots that evening, with none found, Ramey explained.

“It was a difficult fire,” Ramey said. “It took us a long time because of the smoldering insulation in the walls.”

The fire was believed to have started in a corner of the cabinet shop, Ramey said, though the exact cause has not yet been determined and is under investigation.

“There was heavy smoke damage throughout the building and fire damage in the upstairs office ceilings and cabinet shop,” Ramey said.
