The Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) is proud to announce the commencement of our Citizen’s Academy this fall. The academy will begin on Oct. 8 and conclude on Dec. 3.

The classes will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. at the ACSO Emergency Operations facility located at 777 County Road 600 (Piedra Road).

The ACSO’s mission is to protect and serve the citizens of our county through innovative hard work and community partnership. The Citizen’s Academy is designed to provide an overview of this commitment and to create open dialog with our community members.

After an introduction by Sheriff Mike Le Roux and his command staff, the topics presented during the academy include:

• Statutory obligations of the sheriff.

• Patrol operations.

• Use of force and firearms.

• Animal control.

• Detention operations and programs.

• Courts and extraditions.

• Criminal case investigations/crime scene investigations.

• The Office of Emergency Management.

• Wildland firefighting.

• Search and rescue.

• Dispatch and public records.

• School resource officer.

Our commanders, professional staff leaders and deputies responsible for each area will present on the topics.

One of the highlights of the academy is the field day, during which students will participate in scenario-based training. The scenarios will include responding to calls involving stress and critical decision-making, traffic stops, and building searches.

The academy’s capacity is limited to 15 students.

All applicants must be 18 years old and a resident or business owner in Archuleta County. All students must complete the application to be considered for attendance in the academy.

The fee for the academy is $20, which covers the cost of a student T-shirt, materials and refreshments.
