Archuleta Seniors Inc. (ASI) invites you to celebrate with us at the Dia de los Muertos Dance Party on Nov. 3 from 7 p.m. to midnight at the CSU Extension Building.

There will be music by DJ Marcus Rivas. Come join us on a day to gather, remember and celebrate our loved ones who went before us. Tickets are $20 and are available at 451 Hot Springs Blvd. at the Pagosa Senior Center, at the Pagosa Springs Area Chamber of Commerce or online at https://givebutter.com/DDLM4ASI.

There will be a cash bar and Mexican food by the Guadalupanas. Please bring a photo of your loved one(s) to place on the community ofrenda. Bring a dozen homemade cookies and share your recipe for $5 off your ticket price. Children under 12 will be admitted free.

Awards for the top cavalera face painting and Day of the Dead costume will be awarded. There are limited tickets, so get them early. Tickets will be available at the door if we don’t sell out first. For more information, call ASI at (970) 264-2167.

The Day of the Dead is a holiday traditionally celebrated on Nov. 1 and 2, though other days, such as Oct. 31 or Nov. 6, may be included depending on the locality. It is widely observed in Mexico, where it largely developed, and is also observed in other places, especially by people of Mexican heritage.

In preparation for this year’s celebration in Pagosa Springs, ASI is partnering with the Ruby M. Sisson Memorial Library to host a free educational afternoon on Friday, Oct. 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. Come learn about Day of the Dead and help build a community ofrenda.

In many homes people set up ofrendas, or altars, to the departed loved ones. These are decked with lighted candles, special food and whatever the dead enjoyed when they were alive. Bring a photo of your loved one(s) to share. Also learn tips on how to do simple cavalera (sugar skull) face painting, build a flower crown to wear and learn simple scarf hair braiding tips to get your killer outfit ready for the Nov. 3 Dia de los Muertos Dance Party and contest.

Spanish Fiesta Committee to meet Oct. 18

Members of the Spanish Fiesta committee and the general community interested in supporting the 22nd Annual Pagosa Springs Spanish Fiesta are invited to an Oct. 18 meeting to be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Pagosa Senior Center dining hall in the Ross Aragon Community Center (451 Hot Springs Blvd.).

The meeting will discuss headliners for 2024, royalty program development and the 2024 Hispanic and BIPOC scholarship fund, among other details.

We look forward to hearing ideas and input from the greater community and will form subcommittees to engage in our planning process for 2024. The heart of the Spanish Fiesta is the people of Pagosa, and the rich heritage and ancestry from our history, our families and our ancestors. We welcome absolutely everyone to join in on the organizing of this special community event. Please bring your positive energy and motivation to make the 2024 fiesta the best yet.

The meeting will also have a Zoom component so more community members can join and participate virtually. For more information and to get the Zoom link for this meeting, contact Rose Chavez at rosa@psseniors.org.
