Rotary members support Habitat For Humanity

The day was the first official day of fall. The weather was beautiful, and it was a perfect day to be outside, going to the myriad opportunities this little mountain town presents or getting the yard ready for winter. For Pagosa Springs Rotary, it was a perfect day to help Habitat For Humanity build the three homes they are building in Pagosa Springs this year.

It goes without saying that the Pagosa Springs Rotary Club and Habitat For Humanity are all about helping those in need. Recently when these two nonprofit organizations came together with a generous, giving spirit, much was accomplished. Beams were raised, flooring was installed and general cleaning took place. In short, saws were buzzing and hammers were banging.

The Pagosa Springs Rotary Club chooses a monthly, local purpose to better our community. It could be holding a barn dance to raise funds for their scholarship program, supporting other nonprofits like Rise Above Violence or assisting the town with the Fourth of July Parade. September was chosen to assist the worthy cause of the local Habitat For Humanity’s mission to place a needy and worthy family in a home of their own.

Habitat is in the process of building their 31st, 32nd and 33rd homes in Pagosa. It takes a village to pull this off. Or, a small Colorado town of mighty volunteers. For the Rotarians that September Saturday, at the end of the day, they experienced a deep satisfaction and commitment to the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self”.

In this ever-changing world, the one constant is that it feels darn good to be of help to those that need it. Not monetarily, but by simply the giving of one’s time. If you have the inclination to be of help and feel good about yourself as a bonus, visit either the Rotary Club, www.pagosaspringsrotary.org, or Habitat, www.habitatarchuleta.org, to explore how you can be of help to your community.

So, whether it’s building houses, picking up highway trash or stuffing backpacks for the Feed the Children Program, there is always something one can contribute.
