Pirates take fourth, fifth in tournaments

The Pagosa Springs High School Pirate golf team played three tournaments in three days earlier this week, moving the Pirates into the second half of their season.

“It’s getting better,” coach Mark Faber said.

On Monday, the Pirates took fourth at the 11-team Durango Hillcrest Open, behind a pair of Durango teams and Montezuma-Cortez.

Smith tied for first at the event with Durango’s Drew Jepson, with both shooting two under on the par-71 course.

Smith notched birdies on six holes, par on eight and bogeys on six.

Cedar Liverett tied for 25th with a score of 90.

His effort included shooting par on six holes and bogey on six.

Isabel Galloway ended in a four-way tie for 40th with a score of 95.

Her effort included shooting par on five holes and bogey on four holes.

Tyler Dimond finished tied for 52nd with a 106, which included shooting par on two holes and bogey on six.

On Tuesday, the team took part in the Montezuma-Cortez Varsity Invitational, where they finished fifth out of nine teams, behind Durango, Montezuma-Cortez and Monte Vista.

Smith finished second at the event behind Montezuma-Cortez’s Vince Lopez, who finished the day two under par.

Faber relayed that Smith shot par on the final hole, while Lopez birdied it to win.

Smith finished with a 71 on the par-72 course, with that including shooting eagle on five holes, par on 10 and bogey on two.

Faber noted he’s “proud of him sticking with it and staying after it.”

Dimond and Liverett finished as part of a four-way tie with scores of 86.

Dimond shot birdies on two holes, par on five and bogeys on seven.

Liverett shot par on nine holes and bogeys on five.

Galloway finished 39th with a score of 112, shooting par on two holes and bogey on one.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Pirates hosted the Pagosa Springs Invitational.

Results of the tournament were not available by press time Wednesday and will be reported in the Sept. 5 issue of The SUN.

“Isabel, Cedar, Tyler are all getting better,” Faber said, indicating the scores don’t reflect all of the progress. “We’re heading in the right direction.”

Faber noted it’s clear everyone is working hard, which he appreciates.

“We’re just trying to get everybody to their potential,” he said.

The Pirates will play in only one tournament over the next week — the Monte Vista Tournament at Monte Vista Golf Club at 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 6.

Faber noted it will be nice to only have one tournament during the first week of school.
