Pirates face off at trio of tournaments

Posted

The Pagosa Springs High School Pirate golf team took part in three tournaments over the course of a week, with the results showing both bright spots and areas for work.

“I see periods of really good golf,” coach Mark Faber said, adding the team just has to figure out how to have that be consistent for 18 holes.

The Pirates took part in the Monte Vista Golf Tournament on Friday, Sept. 6, finishing second behind the host team.

Johnathon Smith finished second on the day with a 73, which included birdies on two holes, par on 12 and bogey on three.

Tyler Dimond finished seventh with an 86, which included shooting par on six holes and bogeys on nine holes.

Cedar Liverett finished 10th with an 89, shooting par on six holes and bogeys on six holes.

Isabel Galloway finished 17th with a 100, with Galloway shooting par on two holes and bogeys on three holes.

Max Brown finished 19th with a 106. He recorded bogeys on six holes and par on one hole.

On Monday, Sept. 9, the Pirates took part in the Gunnison High School Invitational at Dos Rios Golf Club.

The Pirates finished ninth at the 14-team tournament.

Liverett finished 18th with an 87, which included shooting eagle on one hole, birdie on one, par on five and bogeys on six.

Dimond ended the day 23rd with a 90, logging par on six holes and bogeys on seven.

Galloway finished 56th with a 109, which included shooting birdie on one hole and bogeys on six.

The Pirates finished tied for eighth as a team at the 16-team Dalton Ranch Invite in Durango Tuesday, Sept. 10.

Smith finished fourth on the day with a 75, shooting birdies on three holes, par on 11 holes and bogeys on two.

Liverett finished 46th with a 94, shooting birdie on one hole, par on three and bogeys on seven.

Dimond shot a 97 to finish 54th, shooting par on four holes and bogeys on five.

Max Brown finished 66th with a 103, shooting par on two holes and bogeys on six.

Galloway took part in the girls’ tournament and finished tied for eighth with a 109.

She shot par on two holes and bogeys on three.

Faber noted there were “some really bright spots” and some tough parts at each tournament.

Smith, he indicated, played alright, but was battling “a bit of an injury” that resulted in him not playing in Gunnison and that he played through on Tuesday in Durango.

“He’s still playing well,” Faber said.

Faber indicated the rest of the team is working hard.

On Monday, Sept. 16, the Pirates will play at the Chuck Soria Boys Invitational in Kirtland, N.M., at Riverview Golf Course.

Faber indicated the team will continue to work on improving consistency moving toward the regional tournament later this month.
