Special to The PREVIEW

Want to see an old west gunfight? Come on down to Town Park and watch all of the exciting shooting action and help us celebrate Pagosa Springs’ 125th anniversary.

Admission is free.

The San Juan Shootists, Pagosa Springs’ cowboy fast draw club, are hosting the 2016 Colorado and national championships in Town Park from Tuesday, July 26, through Sunday, July 31. Over 100 of the world’s best men, lady and youth gunfighters will be in town to compete for the championships.

They’ll be dressed up like John Wayne and Miss Kitty from the westerns. They’ll be competing with real single-action Colt-style revolvers shooting a wax bullet. No real live ammo is used.

The 10th annual Colorado State Championship will begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26. The Colorado state finals shoot-offs will begin on Wednesday afternoon, July 27.

On Thursday, July 28, we will have a little warm-up competition for our competitors beginning at 10 a.m. From noon until 4 p.m. on Thursday, we will have a range set up for the public to try cowboy fast draw. We will provide the equipment and training so you too can give it a “shot.” It’s your chance to be John Wayne or Annie Oakley with a real six gun.

The National Championships preliminary competition will begin at 9 a.m. on July 29. The national championship competition will begin at 9 a.m. on July 31. The National Championships shoot-offs for the title will begin at about noon on July 31.

Come as you are. Hope to see you there.
