On last Saturday, May 22nd, the day being set for the annual clean-up day at the cemetery, about 200 people gathered there and spent the day working. Men with teams turned out and it is estimated that close to one hundred loads of gravel was placed on the streets thru the cemetery.
The county commissioners kindly sent a grader, which aided greatly in the work. A most splendid donation was received by the Committee and they still have money to pay for moving the fence and taking in the new grounds.
At the noon hour a fine dinner was spread for all present and coffee served by the Woman’s Civic Club. The streets and grounds are in much better shape than they have ever been. The day was a big success in every way.
We wish to take this opportunity of thanking each and every one who in the least way helped in this work, and especially Harry Macht, who spent a good deal of time in soliciting money, helpers and teams.

The Belarde Brothers saw mill located on the Trujillo road just south of town was damaged considerably last Friday when it caught fire from the slab pit. The Pagosa Springs Volunteer Fire Department and the county fire truck as well as a considerable number of people responded to call for aid and the mill was saved from total destruction.
According to reports a strong wind blew some burning embers from the slab pit into a pile of fresh sawed ties, where the fire started. The major part of the damage was to the stockpiled ties and sawed lumber. The mill house was saved from any actual damage as was all the machinery with the exception of the tracks and rollers to the slab pit and the. lumber piles.
The volunteers and the town fire truck hauled several loads of water and this was used most effectively. The county fire truck was filled from water at the mill well. Volunteer helpers moved large piles of lumber so that it would not be damaged. The fire was brought under control in a couple of hours and the town truck returned to Pagosa Springs.
The damage was not covered by insurance and is variously estimated from $6,000 to $11,000.

There are still a few never-say-die snowmobilers getting in some trips up in the Wolf Creek Pass area. The snow there is going fast but in some places there is plenty of snow for snowmobilers. Most outdoorsmen, though, have taken out rod and reel and are getting in some fishing.
There will be one primary election contest in the county this year with Chris Chavez and Wlllard Seibel to face each other in the Democratic primary for nomination as a candidate for county commissioner. The other commissioner district had no contest for nomination, with Norman Ottaway being nominated by the Democrats. The Republicans had no contests with W.H. Diestelkamp and Dr. Leonard Marquez being nominated for their respective districts.

As the morning sun pierced an early cloud cover sending eerie shadows across the parade ground, the Stars and Stripes were raised to the top of the flag pole and then slowly lowered to half staff.
It was a signal moment in the first of two American Legion-sponsored Memorial Day ceremonies Sunday, events which drew young and old to hear remarks saluting the men and women who have died in war that we Americans might celebrate freedom.
Perhaps 50 persons attended the opening ceremony at the Mullins-Nickerson Legion Hall in Town Park, an event serving as a warmup for the full ceremony to be held just 45 minutes later in Hilltop Cemetery.
With two buglers sounding the call to arms, a rifle squad fired the traditional salute to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and the names of each of those county residents known to have died in battle were sounded by members of the audience.
Prayers, short statements of purpose and memorial comments at the early observance set the stage for more formal ceremonies at the cemetery.
