Fire contained at less than an acre, monitoring continues

The cause of a May 23 fire north of Pagosa Springs remains under investigation.

The fire, which was contained at .84 acres the same day it was reported, was located on private property within Hidden Valley Ranch, according to Pagosa Fire Protection District (PFPD) Chief Robert Bertram.

The fire was reported shortly before 5 p.m. on May 23, with the PFPD, Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Forest Service responding.

Archuleta County Sheriff Mike Le Roux reported during the incident that the fire was in an area of ponderosa pine that is “reasonably” well mitigated, and crews were working to contain the fire with hand line and saw line while treating the interior with water.

Bertram reported later that the fire was contained at about 6:30 p.m., with crews applying about 4,000 gallons of water on the fire and remaining on scene until about 8:30 p.m. on May 23.

Monitoring of the fire site is continuing.

“We are currently still monitoring it,” Bertram explains in a Tuesday email to The SUN. “With all the wind lately, we want to ensure nothing is missed. We have checked the area every day since the fire.”
