Pagosa Springs High School Pirate golfers Tyler Dimond and Chatwin Pickering tied for 38th at this weeks’ 3A state golf tournament in Alamosa.

The tournament took place at Cattails Golf Course, a par-71 course, in Alamosa on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5 and 6.

“Overall, it was a good experience, according to coach Mark Faber, who added, “I’m very proud of both of them.”

The golfers were part of a four-way tie, scoring 164 over the course of the two-day tournament.

“I was excited for the way they looked after the practice round,” Faber said adding, “I thought we were in a pretty good spot, and we had a really rough start to round one for both of them — as rough as it’s been all year, I think, just for the first four or five holes.”

Faber acknowledged they may have been nervous, but that he’s not sure what led to it.

Dimond and Pickering ended day one as part of an eight-way tie for 60th after what Faber called “two very mediocre rounds for both of them the first round.”

Both Pirates shot an 87 on Monday.

Dimond’s effort included shooting par on six holes, while Pickering shot par on seven holes.

Both also improved by 10 strokes on Tuesday, logging 77s.

Faber noted it was the first time he’s ever had golfers shoot the same score both days of the tournament.

“I’m really, really proud of the way they finished,” Faber said. “They came back the next day, and both of them ... played a lot better and actually finished the round really strong.”

Dimond logged a birdie on his last hole, which Faber highlighted, and shot par on 10 holes on Tuesday. Pickering logged birdies on four holes Tuesday, as well as shooting par on six holes.

“Chatwin played as well as he could play,” Faber said, highlighting Pickering was one under on the last nine holes, “which is really good.”

Faber noted that it was a well-run tournament, with those involved doing a great job getting the course ready.

Faber also thanked the local golf course for letting the Pirates practice and participate as the season draws to a close.

Faber noted that the team is young and he feels good about where a lot of the Pirate golfers ended the season.

He also highlighted everyone is set to return next year, with no seniors on this year’s squad.

“I think we should have a pretty promising team,” Faber said.
