Countywide Women’s Bible Study studying Gospel of John

The Countywide Women’s Bible Study is now, with delight, studying the Gospel of John. Wow, there is so much that can be learned from that New Testament book. Reading it is such a blessing to one’s eyes, mind and spirit. How many times have we heard a TV announcer say, “But wait, there’s more!” in an attempt to gain our attention for some near-worthless item? Does that well-overused phrase always mean something unimportant? Not always.

Our Bibles take the colorful Hebrew and Greek words and simplify them for our English understanding. And, we naturally apply that simplified wording to our 21st century mindset; it’s natural for all of us. But, when not looking deeper, we can be somewhat reading “bones” with little meat on them. We can find ourselves robbed of glorious delights in God’s Word. For example, when Jesus touched a certain blind man, we envision a simple touch. But, the Greek tells us that Jesus firmly took hold of that needy person, emphasizing an intense desire to help with that loss of sight. We see a fully involved Jesus not just passing through, like some politician seeking votes; we see Him determined to rescue us from our numerous plights.

It is so enjoyable to involve ourselves in a Bible study that is a spiritual “meat market.” When we shop, we take care to see what is available — its quality, quantity and price. We tell the butcher that we want the best “bang for our buck.” This study is a meat market of sorts, but not a lecture. The ladies are not just sitting around. It’s their study. Their questions, comments and opinions are welcomed and much-appreciated. There isn’t a lecturer, rather a “tour guide” that facilitates, not one that “runs the show.” There aren’t any books or brochures to buy, it’s a “come as you are” time where you bring your heart, mind, questions and Bibles to learn from each other.

Your facilitator is Roberta (‘Bert) Counsell, an ordained pastor for women of every age. She has ministered, with her husband, from San Diego, Calif., to Colorado for over 30 years. She would love to meet you, just come as you are, take your shoes off and let your hair down.

The study meets every Tuesday morning from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the spacious Grace in Pagosa fellowship hall at 1044 Park Avenue, across from the Recreation Center. For added information, call (970) 264-9931. Counsell can’t wait to meet you.
