Local Marines and others celebrate the Marine Corps 247th birthday on Thursday, Nov. 10. During the event, symbolizing the warrior spirit of the Marine Corps, the birthday cake was cut by Maj. Don MacNamee using a sword. The first piece of cake was given to the oldest Marine in attendance, who was Col. Bob Henley, age 92, who entered the Marines in 1951. That piece of cake was then passed to the youngest Marine present, who was retired Chief Warrant Officer 3 Sean Poore, age 46, who entered the Marine Corps in 1994. The passing of the cake represents the transfer of history, legends and obligations of the corps from one generation of Marines to another.
