Our local Pagosa Farmers Market is expanding each week with more variety of products and produce. This Saturday, Aug. 13, will have an extra addition — a cooking demo. We are lucky in our small town to have several chefs and cooks providing delicious choices at the eateries.

Kathy Keyes is one who is known for her breads and baked items, and she will be demonstrating how to make tomato tarts — a savory pastry with locally grown tomatoes, basil, green onions and whole wheat flour from a mill in Rio Grande County.

The market opens at 9 a.m. and the ovens will be warming up, with the demonstration beginning shortly after. A second round of tarts will begin about 9:45 to10 a.m.

The Geothermal Greenhouse Partnership growing domes, along with the Small Growers booth provides the basil and onions, where you can also purchase your own basil plant and other grown goodies.

Another booth, run by Debbie and Kendall McAlister, offers a variety of tomatoes along with other seasonal produce.

Although we do not have set dates, stay tuned — or simply shop each week — for other locals offering cooking demos through the month of September.

We are in the second year of the Pagosa Online Farmers Market (pagosafarmersmarket.net). Check it out for year-round products and gifts or order online and have your purchase ready for you at the live market on Saturdays during the season.

The Southwest Organization for Sustainability, along with generous local grant support, has served as a sponsor for the farmers market for many years.

SNAP cards are welcome and free Double Up Bucks are available for the first $20 SNAP purchase. In addition, qualifying senior citizens can save with Farmers Market vouchers. Please call Debbie at the Area Agency on Aging to see if you can be put on the list. The information number is (970) 403-2164. Then, simply visit the Pagosa Farmers Market any Saturday during the growing season for a $25 voucher, supporting the local food artisans and growers in southwest Colorado.

We hope to see you and your family this Saturday for a taste-of-the-season treat.
