At its April 28 meeting, the San Juan Basin Public Health (SJBPH) Board of Health discussed the dissolution of the health district.

During the lengthy discussion, Marsha Porter-Norton, La Plata County commissioner and SJBPH board member, indicated that La Plata County has an interest in separating from the district, partially due to differences in viewpoints and philosophies with Archuleta County.

She indicated that, if La Plata County decides to separate from SJBPH, the county intends to begin the year-long separation process by July 1.

Concerns were also raised by SJBPH board member Dr. Jon Bruss, among others, about the capacity of Archuleta County to form a public health district and provide services to residents.

At the conclusion of the discussion, board members unanimously indicated support for the dissolution of the health district, with the exception of Archuleta County Commissioner Alvin Schaaf, who was present virtually for the in-person meeting but did not speak.

More information about the meeting will be included in the May 5 issue of The SUN.
