Marina “Mamie” Gallegos, devoted wife, mother and grandmother, was called home to be with her heavenly father on Jan. 31 peacefully in her home.

Mamie was born on Jan. 18, 1937, in Lumberton, N.M., to Leonardo and Matilde Gonzales. She was one of five children. She married Delfin “Spider” Gallegos on Oct. 25, 1955, in Lumberton, N.M., at St. Frances Church and they began their life together in Lumberton. Eventually, they moved to Juanita, Colo., and settled in Pagosa Springs, Colo., soon after. Together they raised one son, Claude.

In her earlier years in Pagosa, Mamie worked as a waitress with some of her native Pagosa friends at various restaurants, Jan’s Café, Al’s Restaurant and the Elk Horn Café to name a few. She was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and was a strong woman of faith serving as a Guadalupana over the years for her parish. She spent the later part of her life in Pagosa as a homemaker and eventually she began babysitting children in her home. She loved being a grandma to not only her grandsons, Lawrence, Delfin and Andrew, but also to Meghan, Miranda and several others, all of who she took care of and helped to raise over the years as if they were her own.

Mamie is survived by her son, Claude (Barbi) Gallegos; brother Leonard Gonzales; brother-in-law Phil Talamante; sister-in-law Barbara Quintana; grandchildren Lawrence (Crystal), Delfin (Yhaira) and Andrew (Emma) Gallegos, Miranda (Derrick) Velarde and Meghan (Daryl) Couch; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Delfin “Spider” Gallegos; parents Leonardo and Matilde Gonzales; sisters Maxine Fresquez and Rose Talamante; and brother Felipe Gonzales.

A rosary was held Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 6:30 p.m. at Pope John Paul II Church. Mass will be held Wednesday, Feb. 9, at 10 a.m. with the burial following at Juanita Cemetery. Services will be streamed on www.popejohnpauliichurch.org. There will be a reception following the graveside services at the Catholic Parish Hall.
