“Midnight at the Pera Palace: The Birth of Modern Istanbul” by Charles King is this month’s book for the Literary Ladies Book Club.

This book evolves from the Ottoman Empire into modern day Istanbul by a variety of international people meeting and living at the famous hotel known as the Pera Palace in Istanbul. It is a social history of one of the world’s intriguing cities with interesting characters including Trotsky to Hemingway, singers, a future pope and European Jews on their way to Israel.

The author is a professor of international affairs and government at Georgetown University. The Literary Ladies will meet on Friday, Sept. 24, from 10:15 a.m. to noon under the ponderosa pines at Marilyn S.’s home located in the Pagosa in the Pines neighborhood.
