A Matter of Faith: A conqueror over anxiety

As the pandemic continues to affect our daily lives, we grow weary. Stop in City Market long enough and you’ll hear that stated in conversations up and down the aisles. Yet, our faith in Jesus tells us we will conquer this.

Romans 8:37 tells us, “yet in all these things we are more than conquerors.” Again, God uses a phrase equivalent to an adjective. You are more than. Beloved, we often walk around feeling less than in our daily life. Please, please, please, hear me. When you walk around feeling less than, not enough, you are not walking in your identity in Christ.

He calls you a victorious conqueror. More than a conqueror. I can’t comprehend that, can you? When I imagine a soldier walking away after winning the war, I can see him proclaiming, “I’m a conqueror.” But, how do you proclaim, “I’m more than a conqueror.”

In all things — what things does Jesus speak of that we can conquer? Looking back to verses 35-36, He tells us. Tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness or peril are some of the circumstances of life we claim victory over. In today’s vernacular, that might equate to something like this: Tribulation means the cause of great suffering. What about the mother who doesn’t know where her child is? As a mother, that would cause me great suffering.

Distress refers to extreme anxiety or pain. Studies show around 275 million people suffer from anxiety. Some tout it as the “biggest mental health crisis.” Wow. Why are we not claiming victory over the things that cause us anxiety? Jesus, the good shepherd, has called us a conqueror over anxiety.

How many of us are the targets of hostility? How many go hungry and naked? How many of us put ourselves in immediate danger in the form of domestic violence, drug abuse, drinking and driving, and other perilous activities?

God says, “My child, you are more than a conqueror over these things. Claim who you are in me.”
