2020/01/obit-schick-FB_IMG_1577739933327-215x300.jpgJacquelyn Mae (Kern) Schick passed away on Dec. 29, 2019, at the age of 90 at Pine Ridge Extended Care Center surrounded by loved ones.
Jackie was born to George and Ida (Bernd) Kern on May 15, 1929, in Platteville, Colo. She graduated from Keenesburg, Colorado High School and Barnes Business College. She is a fourth-generation Coloradoan. On Oct. 1, 1950, Jackie married Eugene Schick. They moved to Pagosa Springs in February 1955 after buying Sunset Cabins.
Jackie was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene, and her parents, George and Ida Kern.
She is survived by her son, Greg (Dena), of Pagosa Springs; daughter Kathy (Tom, deceased), of Southport, N.C.; grandsons Brad (Erica), of Arvada, Colo; Matt (Amanda), of Pagosa Springs; great-granddaughters Emma, Clara, Jacquelyn and Macy. She is also survived by two sisters: Georgene Abbott, of Keenesburg, Colo., and Sevella Geilert, of Lakewood, Colo.; seven step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-granddaughter; and various nieces and nephews.
She touched the lives of many as the town clerk of Pagosa Springs for 40 years. She received the Presidential Award for her service to the Town of Pagosa Springs. Jackie was a lifelong member of the Order of the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron. She taught Sunday school at the Methodist Church for many years. After retirement in 2003, she volunteered at the Methodist Thrift Store; Pagosa Chamber of Commerce, where she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award; and the Pagosa Springs Senior Center, where she served as president of the board.
Jackie was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend in both Colorado and North Carolina. She loved her family, life and traveling. She and Gene were proud to say they visited all 50 states. She continued to travel after his death. She was quick to extend hospitality and fed her grandsons’ basketball teams many times over the years. She was known for her sweet smile, easy laugh and getting along with everyone. She will be greatly missed.
A Celebration of Life to honor her wonderful life will be held over Memorial Day weekend in May. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory can be made to the Schick Family Scholarship that provides scholarships to Pagosa Springs High School seniors.
