Winnemucca, Nev., resident Lola Lorene Lord passed away peacefully on June 24 at her home with family by her side. She was 98 years old. Lorene was born in Stevens County, Kan., on March 24, 1921, to John Joel and Lola Ruth (Simpson) Grantham. She married Melvin “Shorty” Lord on June 9, 1939, in Saguache, Colo. They lived in central and western Oregon, working in the timber industry, until 1958, when they moved to Pagosa Springs, Colo. Lorene lived in Pagosa until fall of 2009, when she moved to Winnemucca, Nev.

Lorene was a dedicated wife, mother and, later, an active grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She tallied lumber at sawmills in Blanding, Utah, and for the San Juan Lumber Company in Pagosa Springs, Colo. Lorene and Melvin founded Lord’s Logging in Pagosa and later she worked as a black powder gun machinist. Lorene was a member of the Assembly of God Church and served the church teaching Sunday school, as Women’s Missionary Council Association Leader and Vacation Bible School director. She also enjoyed playing the accordion, reading, cooking, sewing, gardening and practical jokes. Her hobbies included politics and researching family history.

Lorene is survived by her four children: John Lord, of Pagosa Springs, Colo.; Nancy (E.C.) Cates, of Winnemucca, Nev.; Bill (Lynn) Lord, of Prineville, Ore.; Bob (Doris) Lord, of Gilbert, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, 23-plus great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lorene was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin B. Lord, in 1996; siblings Lydia and Berl Hankins; Grant Grantham; Fern and Chester Hanes; great-granddaughter Danielle E. Lord; great-grandsons Christian S. Cain and Christopher A. Love; and nephews Michael G. Grantham; Berl Hankins Jr.; and Freddie R. Hanes; and nieces Ruth A. Grantham; Connie R. Hanes; and Glenda L.(Hanes) Savage.

A service will be held on Saturday, July 13, at 10 a.m. at Hill Top Cemetery. There will be a reception following the graveside service at Open Door Church.
