Jan Newton Ogletree was born Jan. 5, 1938, to Orville and Vivian (Burge) Ogletree in Houston, Texas. On June 4, we lost our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend at his mountain cabin in Pagosa Springs, Colo.

He graduated from Saint Thomas High School and Saint Thomas University in Houston. He attended Seminary in New York a short time before enrolling at Tulane University in New Orleans, La. He was student manager of the Tulane football team for two years and graduated from Tulane with a degree in zoology. He went on to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, graduating in 1966 with a medical degree. While in Galveston, he met Barbara Lewis and they were married in 1965. In June of 1966, he entered the Air Force and served as a flight surgeon until 1970.

He began his medical residency in Dallas in 1970 and finished in 1975. Jan started his urology practice in Austin, Texas, following residency and continued the practice for over 30 years. He served on several hospital boards, committees and as chief of staff throughout his career. He was recognized as Austin’s Physician of the Year in 1983.

Jan retired in 2007. Upon retiring, Jan and Barbara would spend six months in the Austin area and six months in the summer near Pagosa Springs.

Their place in Pagosa Springs was a mountain cabin surrounded by national forest. Retirement activities included golf, gardening, travel and volunteering. Jan made many friendships on the golf course. He joined other physicians in this country competing in a Ryder Cup-type competition against other physicians from Britain. He was a member of the Catholic churches in both the Austin area and Pagosa Springs and was a constant volunteer in both. He was very active in the Knights of Columbus and projects of the church. He also volunteered at the Pagosa Springs Golf Club as well as a professional golf tournament in Austin.

Other volunteering included Habitat for Humanity and the Audubon Society.

Jan was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Scott Leigh.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter Cynthia Reid and husband Jon; daughter Marla Spellman and husband Lance; five grandchildren: Hannah Hooper, Tyler Hooper, Toby Hooper, Lauren and Spellman, Derek Spellman; mother-in-law Loretta Lewis; brother-in-law Mike Lewis and family, and numerous cousins.

A funeral Mass will be held at the JP2 Catholic Church in Pagosa Springs at 9:45 a.m. on July 3. Internment will be at the church columbarium immediately following the funeral Mass. Memorial gifts in Jan’s memory may be made to AIHWA, American Initiative for Health and Wellness in Africa, aihwa.org.
