The 1968 election year was intense to say the very least. Civil Rights Movement leader Martin Luther King Jr. had been assassinated in April. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy had been assassinated in June of that same year. Opposition to the Vietnam War was widespread. Incumbent Democratic President Lyndon B. Johnson withdrew from the presidential race.
