Special to The PREVIEW

The Pagosa Springs Community Band will begin rehearsals on Monday, Sept.11, in the Pagosa Springs High School Band room at 6:30 p.m.

Registration will begin at 6 p.m. and a registration fee of $15 is asked for. This assists the band in purchasing new music throughout the year. At registration, band members will receive music folders and rehearsal schedules.

The Community Band is conducted by Larry Elginer and Malinda Burnett. Elginer has brilliantly led the Community Band for five years. He is a professional trumpet player and previously taught award-winning bands in California. Burnett is the band director at Pagosa Springs Middle School. She is a native of Pagosa Springs and attended Fort Lewis College in Durango. Her major instrument is saxophone.

Having several concerts a year, the Community Band is part of the Pagosa Springs Instrumental Music Society (PSIMS). PSIMS is a nonprofit organization in Pagosa that supports instrumental music in many different ways. From giving assistance to students enrolled in private lessons to helping the instrumental music programs in the public schools, members of the Community Band perform throughout the year for donations to help in these endeavors.

The Community Band’s fall concert is Oct. 27 in the high school auditorium.

Who can join Community Band? If you have ever played an instrument before, dust it off and join in the fun. The band consists of musicians who have not played in a very long time to those who have been professional musicians and every kind of musician in between. If you own an instrument, join the band in making beautiful and boisterous music. Student musicians are considered on recommendation from their private lesson teacher and/or band director.

For any questions concerning the Community Band, please call PSIMS board president Larry Baisdon at 317-9288.
