The Pagosa Ranger District of the San Juan National Forest attracts people from all over the world who come to enjoy the beauty and recreational opportunities that abound in Pagosa Country.

From rocks a billion and a half years old in the Weminuche Wilderness to the travertine deposited by hot springs yesterday, the geological story behind the scenery is complex and fascinating.

Join Rick and Lynne Stinchfield on a pleasant hike to Ice Cave Ridge to learn more about the rocks and processes that underlie Pagosa Country.

The hike will take place on Saturday, Aug. 18, at 9 a.m. and will last two hours.

The walk is around 2 miles round-trip with 400 feet of vertical gain. Wear walking shoes or boots, dress appropriately for the weather and bring drinking water. Please leave four-legged friends at home. The program is free and there is no need to preregister.

The hike begins at the Piedra River Trailhead northwest of Pagosa Springs. From U.S. 160, go north on Piedra Road (CR 600) for approximately 16 miles. The trailhead is on the left a few hundred yards after crossing the Piedra River and is marked by a sign.
