Special to The SUN

The San Juan Outdoor Club (SJOC) is sponsoring a hike and tour of Chimney Rock National Monument on Tuesday, April 17, for the local Earth Day/Week Celebration.

Outstanding views and an interpretive tour of the archeology sites and great house in our local national monument are part of the tour. Depending on the group, we will split and take two routes:

• A moderate road walk to the Chimney Rock ridge top, followed by a short walk up the trail to the Great House, a total of 7 miles round-trip.

• Option two is a shorter, steeper off-trail route, following game trails to the ridge before rejoining the road, with a distance of about 6 miles total. Both routes have 800-foot of elevation gain. Meet in front of Camino Real (formerly Alco) for a 9:30 a.m. departure, returning to town about 2 p.m. Bring plenty of water, lunch, snack and dress for the weather.

Ernie O’Toole, president of the Chimney Rock Interpretive Association, will be the hike/tour leader. The public is welcome.
