At the Jan. 16 Archuleta School District (ASD) Board of Education meeting, members of the community were recognized for their outstanding service to ASD.

Pagosa Springs Elementary School Principal Justin Cowan took the opportunity to recognize the efforts of Partners In Education (PIE), a highly productive group of committed and involved parents who organize activities that provide extra funding and boost school spirit.

PIE members Aubrie Limebrook, Renea Smith and Sanya Peterson, three of many dedicated parents, were commended for their contributions.

Board member Brooks Lindner acknowledged the presence of The Pagosa Springs SUN’s staff writer Chris Mannara, a graduate of Pagosa Springs High School and Fort Lewis College, who has attended every board meeting and planning advisory meeting since he was assigned to cover the district in August. Lindner called him a “success story” and praised him for his continued efforts.

Also at the meeting, in commemoration of January School Board Appreciation Month, ASD Superintendent Linda Reed formally acknowledged the contributions from current board members Dr. Greg Schick (president), Bruce Dryburgh (vice president), Brooks Lindner (secretary) and Jason Peterson (treasurer).

“Education today is extremely complex with an increasing number of challenges, such as limited resources, evolving academic offerings and shifting expectations. As volunteers, our board members spend countless hours trying to figure out how to provide the best learning environment possible for all students. They develop policies and make tough decisions on issues affecting the entire community,” said Reed. “This is a board that works very well together. They respect each other. I applaud their efforts and feel honored to work side by side with them.”

ASD board meetings are usually held at 6 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month with work sessions beginning at 5 p.m. Meetings are open to the public and are generally in the Pagosa Springs High School auditorium.

ASD posts agendas at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled meeting.
