Photo courtesy John JohnsonA young bull moose pays a visit to a neighborhood located 3.5 miles north of town off Piedra Road around noon on Monday. The moose was also spotted in a Lake Pagosa Park neighborhood later that afternoon. About 10 years ago, moose were relocated from Utah to the Grand Mesa and the Upper Rio Grande region and they continue to disperse. There are an estimated 2,600 moose in the state. They especially like willows along water and wetlands, but they can be found in almost any terrain. Moose can be very aggressive, especially when they see dogs. They should be observed from a distance. Do not approach them. Moose are the largest members of the deer family, which include deer, elk and moose.
