Special to The PREVIEW

The Pagosa Springs Community Gardeners are offering a special opportunity to learn about the natural prevention of weeds.

Ethan Proud, the new Archuleta County Weed and Pest supervisor, will discuss “Weeds: How to Prevent Them. Not Just A Chemical Talk” on Tuesday, July 18, at 4:30 p.m. in the River Pointe Coffee House meeting room, 445 San Juan St., along the San Juan Riverwalk in downtown Pagosa Springs.

Although well-versed in and an advocate of chemical applications, Proud will offer an enlightening perspective of practical, natural methods of control with a focus on the prevention of weeds. Proud will discuss the interaction between humans and weeds, and real-life natural solutions. In addition, Proud will discuss what a weed is (depending on one’s outlook) and the various classes of weeds.

Proud’s background in environmental resource management includes entomology, botany, plant taxonomy, ecology and environmental chemistry. In addition to chemical control, Proud has experience in mechanical removal and biological control release.

The following speaker in the free series will be Robin Young, the new CSU/Archuleta County Extension director. Young will present “Pest Control: Microorganisms to Bears” on July 25 at 4:30 p.m.

Free and open to the public, the talks begin promptly at 4:45 p.m. and are followed by a question-and-answer period. Please join us.
