Special to The PREVIEW

On July 15 at 9 a.m., the Wolf Creek Christian Writers Network (WCCWN) will host an all-day workshop.

The WCCWN has invited Sarena Ulibarri from World Weaver Press in Albuquerque, N.M., to come and talk with the writers about submitting to publishers.

Want to start submitting your fiction to publishers or agents, but don’t know where to start? Whether you’re working on short stories or novels, this seminar will cover everything you need to know to make the best first impression, including how to write a good query letter, common pitfalls in opening pages, publishing jargon and how to handle rejection. We’ll discuss the risks and rewards of small press compared to the “Big Five” publishing houses, learn how to identify the best markets for your work, and talk about how to spot a scam publisher.

Ulibarri is the editor in chief of World Weaver Press. She earned a master’s from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and attended the Clarion Fantasy and Science Fiction Writers’ Workshop at UCSD in 2014. Her fiction has appeared in more than 35 magazines and anthologies, including Lightspeed, Fantastic Stories of the Imagination, Weirdbook and elsewhere. She currently lives in New Mexico and has two corgis. You can find out more about her at www.sarenaulibarri.com.

All attendees, please send your first 500 words (Times New Roman, 12 point, double spaced) as a Word (or Word-compatible) document, with the title, author’s name, and whether it is the beginning of a short story, novella or novel at the top of the page. If this length ends in the middle of a sentence, it can run over long enough to finish out the sentence or paragraph.

Please send the first page of your novel or short story so we can workshop it. Send to Betty Slade at betty@bettyslade.com. July 8 is the deadline for these submissions. These will be sent to the publisher. These critique will be included in the cost of the workshop.

For more details, go to the WCCWN website: http://www.wolfcreekwriters.com/. The cost to attend for nonmembers is $20. Bring your own lunch. Snacks and drinks will be provided.

The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 15 at CrossRoad Christian Fellowship, 1044 Park Ave.
