obit-Appl-Loren-obit-copyLoren Kay Appl, July 2, 1942-July 8, 2016, was raised in Leoti, Kan., by his parents, Elmer and Gaynell Appl, with farming and ranching in his blood.

A military veteran, he was awarded a Purple Heart in the Vietnam War serving in the Army. Loren was a true patriot and American. Loren’s second home was in the air as a professional pilot culminating his career as a 737 captain retiring from Southwest Airlines with 35,000-plus hours of flight time. Using his background as a teacher, he taught many to chase their dreams and learn to fly. He enjoyed flying, farming and ranching and the mountains of Colorado.

Loren is survived by his longtime love of 33 years, Kathy Miller; as well as his two sons, Clayton (Kelly) and granddaughter Brittany, of Denver, Colo., and Brandon (Katrina) Nicholas and Alyssa, of Escondido, Calif.

A celebration of life ceremony will be held at a future date. Please visit the online guestbook for Loren at www.FrenchFunerals.com.
