Join those of us from the Archuleta County Victim Assistance Program (ACVAP) on April 27 as we show our support for victims and survivors of sexual assault by wearing our denim.
April 27 is Denim Day, part of Sexual Assault Awareness month.
Denim Day began after an 18-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by her driving instructor. The Italian Supreme Court ruled that the young woman’s jeans were too tight and that she must have had to help the rapist remove her jeans to get them off; therefore, they ruled it consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans to show their support for the victim. Since then, every year, the Peace Over Violence organization has held Denim Day to raise awareness of sexual assault.
On April 27, businesses around Archuleta County will wear denim in support of Denim Day. Employees will pay $5 to wear denim to work. All donations will go to support ACVAP.
We will also have a community walk beginning at the bell tower at noon to show our support for survivors of sexual assault. We will meet at the bell tower on Lewis Street wearing our denim and walk around the block to show that we support victims and survivors of sexual assault.
