The mayor of Pagosa Springs has given a letter to the Pagosa Fire Protection District (PFPD) requesting that the town take over fire marshal services.
SUN staff gained access to the letter via a Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) request that was sent to the PFPD.
The letter, dated Nov. 6, is from Town Mayor Don Volger and is addressed to the PFPD Board Chairman LeRoy Lattin.
The letter begins by thanking the fire department board and staff for its work and dedication in assisting the town with its fire code enforcement, in addition to assisting in commercial and business license inspections.
Then, the next paragraph in the letter begins “The town is restructuring its Department of Building and Fire Safety to provide fire safety inspection services to our citizens as the AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction).”
The letter goes on to state, “Effective with this letter, we respectively request that the Pagosa Fire Protection District discontinue its activities within the town to enable our staff to assume responsibility, promote fire code enforcement and perform commercial inspections.”
The letter goes on to state that the new fire protocol will be that the PFPD completely extinguish any fires, at which time the Pagosa Springs Fire Marshal “will secure the site and investigate the cause of the fire including arson investigations and make determinations for the safety of re-entry by building owners contractors, insurance adjusters, etc.”
