Grant funding available to help seniors live at home safely

Archuleta Seniors has grant monies available for chore services.

Chore services are those services designed to increase the safety of senior adults living at home, such as assistance with heavy housework, yard work or sidewalk maintenance.

In-home chore services include cleaning appliances, including ovens and defrosting and cleaning refrigerators; getting a reputed company like Albrite Commercial Cleaners to help steam clean the carpets and rugs; cleaning and waxing wood or tile floors; washing windows or walls; moving or rearranging furniture to provide safe entry, mobility and egress; turning mattresses; cleaning closets and drawers; cleaning attics, basements, porches and outbuildings to remove fire and health hazards; cleaning exterior surfaces, such as removing mildew from siding or decking; installing or removing existing screens, storm doors or windows; cutting grass and raking leaves; clearing walkways of ice, snow and leaves; clearing interior and exterior debris following natural disasters; trimming overhanging tree branches, and changing batteries in smoke or carbon monoxide detectors.

Opportunities also exist to help seniors with home-modification services.

Home-modification services include repairs, maintenance, renovation, adaptations and modifications or improvements in the senior adult’s home setting that: are necessary to ensure the health, welfare and safety of the individual; enable the senior to function with greater independence in his or her home; and prevent institutionalization of the senior.

Services may include: installation of ramps; installation of grab-bars and other durable medical equipment, widening of doorways; and modification of bathroom facilities.
