As of Nov. 1, GECKO (Giving Every Child Knowledge of the Outdoors) is officially accepting applications for its 2016 scholarship for summer outdoor and wilderness survival programs.

Teenagers between the ages of 15 and 17 years of age are encouraged to apply between now and Jan. 5.

The application form is available on the GECKO website, www.joingecko.org, under the “scholarships” tab, and interviews will commence early next year. For questions, contact info@joingecko.org or visit the website www.joingecko.org

Durango teen Teal Lehto had this to say about her scholarship experience: “I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to have an experience like NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) Alaska. Since getting back I have started working at an outdoors gear store, a job I never would’ve been able to get without this experience. I am also working on a getting an internship with an outdoors gear manufacturer, and becoming a raft guide for next summer. I am starting my career in the outdoors industry with the experience and knowledge I gained on my NOLS course. All of which would not have been possible without the opportunity you gave me. The impact that this experience has had on my life goes far beyond the scope of just this adventure, it opened the doors for so many more to come. I am so thankful to have been the recipient of such kindness, thank you all so much.”

The next GECKO fundraising event is a bumper garage sale. Rain or shine.
